What is Commercial Solar Battery Backup?

Commercial battery storage systems turn solar installations into independent energy solutions for businesses and commercial spaces. Solar battery systems store energy generated by solar panels that can be used at night, during peak utility hours, or during outages. Designed for efficiency and reliability, these systems are ideal for maintaining critical operations.

Benefits of Commercial Battery Installation

Lower Energy Costs

Battery systems help stabilize energy costs and protect businesses from rising utility rates. With a backup system in place, stored energy can be used during peak demand times to protect against high costs.

Reliable Power

Battery storage solutions help businesses maintain critical operations so businesses can operate without interruptions, even if the grid goes dark. These independent energy systems provide automatic backup power, ensuring power through severe weather events and outages.

How Does Battery Backup Work?

During the sunlight hours, solar panels generate electricity to power business operations. Any excess energy is stored in the battery system for later use. When grid power is unavailable, or energy rates are high, the system automatically uses stored energy to maintain operations. Solar Alternatives designs every system to meet the unique energy needs of each business.

Incentives for Commercial Solar Battery Storage

Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC)

Under the Inflation Reduction Act, qualifying commercial battery projects over 5 kWh can earn a 30% federal tax credit. Projects must meet prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements to secure the full benefit. After 2025, eligibility will depend on meeting U.S. emissions reduction goals. Tax credits will depend on the solar and electric sectors meeting federal emissions reduction targets. The U.S. Department of Treasury aims for a 75% reduction in emissions below 2022 levels. It’s important to consult a tax professional to navigate these evolving policies and maximize savings.

Rural Energy for America Program (REAP)

In addition to the ITC incentive, agricultural producers and rural small businesses may be eligible for the federal Rural Energy for America Program. Offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), this program provides financial assistance to help agricultural producers and rural small businesses invest in renewable energy systems and energy efficiency improvements. Eligible commercial solar and battery projects can receive grants covering 25-50% of total project costs, significantly reducing upfront expenses and improving return on investment.

Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS)

MACRS is a federal tax incentive that allows businesses to recover the cost of solar and battery systems through accelerated depreciation. This means commercial battery installations can deduct the system’s value from their taxes over a shorter time period.

Additional Incentives

Commercial solar projects may also qualify for additional credits:

  • 10% for projects in energy communities, such as former coal, oil, or natural gas extraction areas.
  • 10% for systems using at least 40% U.S.-manufactured components.
  • 10% for systems under 5 MW located in low-income or tribal communities.
  • 20% for systems under 5 MW that are part of low-income residential building projects.

Commercial Solar Solutions Across the Gulf Coast

Solar Alternatives delivers commercial energy solutions throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. With over 15 years of experience, the engineering team has successfully completed projects ranging from small retail installations to large-scale commercial facilities, designing each system to meet specific business requirements and energy goals.

Louisiana’s First Commercial Solar Microgrid

This state-of-the-art microgrid system showcases the future of commercial solar in Louisiana. Solar Alternatives, in collaboration with SBP, a national disaster resilience and recovery organization, engineered and installed a comprehensive 178kW system with 450 solar panels and integrated battery storage at St. Peter Apartments, a 50-unit apartment community. With seamless energy management, the microgrid optimizes solar power generation, stores excess energy for later use, and provides automatic backup when needed. This innovative system ensures uninterrupted power during outages while significantly reducing energy costs.

Engineering Resiliency Hubs

Solar Alternatives engineered one of the largest resilience hubs in the Gulf South for CrescentCare Community Health Center. The solar and battery system features 313 solar panels and a 220kWh battery storage system that maintains critical healthcare operations during outages. The installation allows CrescentCare to preserve vital medications, power essential medical equipment, and serve as a community resource center during emergencies. The project establishes a model for critical infrastructure facilities seeking to maintain essential services during extended outages while reducing dependence on traditional grid power.
